Child Behavior Visits in New York City
Every child develops at their own pace, and every family faces moments of uncertainty. Is this behavior typical for their age, or is something else going on? At West End Pediatrics, we understand that concerns about your child's attention, emotions, learning, or social interactions can be deeply worrying. That's why we offer dedicated behavior visits designed to give your child and your family the focused time and attention these concerns deserve.

Our board-certified pediatricians have decades of combined experience evaluating and supporting children with a wide range of behavioral, emotional, and developmental concerns. We take a thoughtful, individualized approach, because no two children are alike, and no single solution works for every family.
Understanding Your Child's Behavior
Children express themselves differently at different ages, and what looks like a behavioral challenge may have many possible explanations. A toddler's tantrums, a school-age child's difficulty focusing in class, a teenager's sudden withdrawal from friends: these can be normal parts of growing up, or they can signal something that benefits from professional evaluation.

Raising children in New York City adds its own dimensions to these questions. The academic expectations of Manhattan schools, the social dynamics of city living, and the pace of life in neighborhoods like the Upper West Side and Greenwich Village create a unique context that our pediatricians understand well from over 30 years of working with local families.
What We Evaluate During a Behavior Visit
Behavior visits at our practice address a broad range of concerns, including attention and focus difficulties such as ADHD, anxiety, mood changes, and emotional regulation, school performance and learning challenges, social difficulties and peer relationships, developmental delays and autism spectrum concerns, sleep disruptions related to behavioral issues, and adjustment challenges related to family transitions or stressful events.

Our pediatricians are experienced in identifying when a concern can be managed with guidance and support in our office, and when your child would benefit from referral to a psychologist, psychiatrist, developmental specialist, or other expert. Through our longstanding relationships with pediatric subspecialists across New York's major academic medical centers, we can connect your family with the right resources.
How a Behavior Visit Works
Because behavioral and developmental concerns require more time than a routine checkup, behavior visits are scheduled as dedicated appointments that are longer than a standard visit. This ensures your pediatrician has the time to listen carefully, gather a thorough history, and discuss observations from parents, teachers, and caregivers.
Depending on the nature of the concern, your doctor may ask you to complete specific questionnaires or screening tools prior to the appointment. These standardized assessments help guide the evaluation and ensure nothing is overlooked. During the visit, your pediatrician will review the results, conduct an examination, and discuss findings and next steps with you.
For ongoing concerns, such as ADHD management or monitoring a treatment plan, follow-up behavior visits can be scheduled at regular intervals to track your child's progress and adjust the plan as needed.
Coordinating Care With Specialists and Schools
Many behavioral and developmental challenges benefit from a team approach. Our pediatricians work collaboratively with child psychologists, therapists, developmental pediatricians, neurologists, and other specialists to ensure your child receives comprehensive care. As voluntary faculty at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell, our doctors have established strong referral relationships with exceptional specialists both at Weill Cornell and at other leading academic institutions throughout the city.

We also understand that behavioral concerns often intersect with school life. Whether your child needs classroom accommodations, a neuropsychological evaluation, or coordination with school counselors, our team can provide the documentation and communication needed to support your child's academic experience.
When to Request a Behavior Visit
You know your child best. If something feels different, if teachers are reporting problems you're hearing about for the first time, if your child seems more anxious or withdrawn than usual, if homework has become a nightly struggle, or if you simply have a nagging feeling that something isn't quite right, trust your instincts and call us.

You do not need a referral to schedule a behavior visit. Simply call our office and let our staff know the nature of your concern so we can set aside the appropriate amount of time. Please note that if your child is not up to date on their well child visits, we may ask you to schedule a wellness exam prior to or alongside the behavior visit.
To schedule, call our Uptown office at 212-769-3070 or our Downtown office at 212-353-0072.
