Newborn Care Visits in New York City
The first weeks and months with a new baby are filled with wonder, and with questions. Is my baby eating enough? Why are they crying? Is that rash normal? Should I be worried about jaundice? At West End Pediatrics, we believe that supporting new parents through this extraordinary time is one of the most meaningful things we do.

Our board-certified pediatricians have been guiding families through the newborn period for over 30 years. We provide thorough, compassionate care for your baby from the very first days of life, and we make ourselves available to answer the questions that inevitably come at 2 AM on a Tuesday. Because a doctor from our practice is always on call, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, new parents never have to wonder whether help is available.
Welcoming Your New Baby
Bringing a newborn home in New York City is a unique experience. Whether you're in a walk-up on the Upper West Side or a doorman building in Greenwich Village, the logistics of city life with a newborn can feel overwhelming on top of the already enormous adjustment of becoming a parent, or adding a new member to your family.

Our pediatricians understand this context intimately. We've cared for thousands of newborns across Manhattan, and we know that the guidance new parents need goes beyond the clinical. From navigating stroller-friendly routes to the office, to understanding what's normal versus what warrants a call, we are here to help you settle into life with your new baby with confidence.
Your Baby's First Visit to Our Office
We recommend that newborns are seen in our office within one to two days after discharge from the hospital. This first visit is an important milestone. It's our chance to check on your baby's early adjustment to life outside the womb and to make sure feeding is going well.

During this initial appointment, your pediatrician will check your baby's weight to assess whether they are regaining the small amount typically lost after birth. We will evaluate for signs of jaundice, examine your baby's overall health, and discuss how feeding is going, whether you are breastfeeding, formula feeding, or doing a combination of both. This is also your opportunity to ask every question on your mind, no matter how small it may seem. There are no unnecessary questions when it comes to your newborn.
What We Monitor During Newborn Visits
In the early weeks and months, your baby will be seen frequently so we can closely track their growth, development, and health. At each visit, we measure weight, length, and head circumference and record these on a growth curve. We monitor feeding patterns, bowel habits, and sleep. We assess your baby's reflexes, muscle tone, and neurological development. And we administer immunizations according to the schedule recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

We also pay close attention to you, the parent. The postpartum period can be physically and emotionally demanding, and our pediatricians are trained to recognize signs of postpartum mood changes. If we sense that a parent is struggling, we will gently raise the topic and help connect you with appropriate support. Your wellbeing is inseparable from your baby's.
Breastfeeding, Feeding, and Nutrition Support
Feeding is one of the most common sources of both joy and stress for new parents. Whether you choose to breastfeed, formula feed, or use a combination approach, our pediatricians provide evidence-based guidance without judgment. We support your decision and help you navigate the challenges that may arise, from latching difficulties and milk supply concerns to questions about formula selection and introduction of solid foods down the road.

Our team has a particular passion for supporting new parents through the early feeding journey. We take the time to observe feedings when helpful, answer questions about supplementation and vitamin D, and provide reassurance when things feel uncertain. We also work with lactation consultants and can refer families who need additional specialized breastfeeding support.
The Newborn Visit Schedule
In the first year of life, your baby will have frequent well visits to ensure everything is on track. The typical newborn and infant visit schedule includes appointments at three to five days old, two weeks, one month, two months, four months, six months, nine months, and twelve months. Each visit builds on the last, tracking your baby's trajectory and addressing the developmental topics most relevant to their current age.

Between scheduled visits, we are always available by phone for questions and concerns. New parents should never hesitate to call. We expect your calls and welcome them.
Prenatal Consultations for Expecting Parents
If you are expecting a baby and searching for a pediatrician in Manhattan, we invite you to visit our office before your child is born. Prenatal consultations give you the chance to meet our physicians, tour the office, learn about our approach to care, and ask any questions about what to expect in the first weeks after delivery.
Choosing a pediatrician is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a new parent, and we want you to feel confident in your choice. To schedule a prenatal visit, call our Uptown office at 212-769-3070 or our Downtown office at 212-353-0072.
